Synopsis

Three generations of a Saskatchewan farming family navigate a drought, a land dispute, and the question of who gets to decide when something is over.

Open Country follows the Kowalski family across a single growing season as they face the worst drought in forty years, a legal challenge from a corporate land buyer, and the quiet fracture between a father who built the farm and a daughter who isn't sure she wants it. Shot over fourteen months with a two-person crew, the film is a portrait of inheritance — what we pass down, what we owe, and what we let go.
